According to reports from UK publication Autocar, the brand is working on an electric roller that may be referred to as the « Silent Shadow ».
It’s a big change of direction for the luxury automaker known for its thirsty large displacement engines and heavy vehicles. Engines for commercial aircraft are also built.
The understanding is that Rolls-Royce will not simply install an electric motor and batteries in an existing vehicle, as many companies did when they first tried to drive zero emissions. Instead, the ultra-luxury manufacturer will use a brand new platform for electric cars.
Rolls-Royce is likely to borrow heavily from its parent company BMW, which is well advanced in building a new line of electric vehicles.
Sharing platforms is common with large vehicle manufacturers, allowing them to spread the huge cost of developing electric cars across multiple brands.
The VW Group shares components and platforms for the SUVs Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg.
And Hyundai just unveiled its new scalable electric car platform, which can be used to build electric vehicles of all sizes, from small hatches to large seven-seat SUVs.
The electric Rolls-Royce would be critical to the brand’s expansion in China, one of the world’s largest markets for electric cars and Rolls-Royce.
The famous British brand first introduced a radical-looking electric car concept in 2016 called the 103EX.
It is unclear whether Rolls-Royce will keep the futuristic design of the car, but some design elements should be retained.
The machine is likely to be powered by multiple electric motors that are required to shift the EV’s excessive mass and provide all-wheel drive.
A Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV weighs more than 2,600 kg. So if heavy batteries are added, the Rolls can tip the scales at nearly three tons.
The cheapest Rolls-Royce in Australia costs more than $ 600,000 plus road costs. An electric version built on a brand new platform could easily dwarf the brand’s most expensive machine, the over $ 1 million Phantom.
