Ayrton Senna’s fight for his third Formula 1 world championship title in 1991 is part of a special edition of the Autosport magazine that appears today (January 14th).
The Mercedes Formula 1 Team has included the Danish youngster Frederik Vesti in its program for young drivers.
Vesti finished fourth for Prema in last year’s FIA Formula 3 Championship with three wins and will become ART for this season change.
He is a former Danish karting champion who won races in Formula Ford and Formula 4 before taking the Formula Regional Championship F3 for Prema in 2019.
After competing last year Prema was promoted to FIA F3, he won more feature race wins than any other driver.
Regarding his chance, Vesti said: « I dreamed of being a Mercedes junior and have been like that for so many years worked hard for it, and that motivation lifted me every day.
« Working with Mercedes, the best team in the world, is a huge boost for my career and I’m really looking forward to building a strong relationship in the future. «
Mercedes has followed Vesti’s career for many years and signed it before it turns into a title-winning F3 campaign in 2021.
Gwen Lagrue, Driver Development Advisor at Mercedes, said: « Fred’s commitment and dedication is something we like to see and very much respect. I remember sending me updates on his debut single-seater seasons and giving us details of his progress, something we always appreciate.
« His 2019 European Formula Regional Championship was impressive and in the FIA F3 last year He’s been very consistent this year. We are happy to welcome him to the Mercedes family and look forward to seeing him fight for the title in the FIA F3 this season. «
Mercedes has a lot of young drivers in his books, including Williams driver George Russell and Esteban Ocon from Alpine in Formula 1.
In karting, Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Alex Powell as well as the Eurocup Formula Renault driver Paul Aron.
ART has confirmed that one of Vesti’s F3 teammates will be Russian Aleksandr Smolyar, who had an impressive rookie campaign last year.
He took a podium at Monza and won on the road at Silverstone before him a penalty e brought to his knees after the race. He got ten top ten placements and one pole position in Hungary.
