The Pittsburgh Steelers signed a return to their list that Tuesday afternoon, and no, it’s not James Conner.

Moments ago, the Steelers announced that they had signed Kalen Ballage for a year . He started the 2020 season with the New York Jets before finally moving to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ballage had 303 rushing yards and three touchdowns last season. He also showed he can help in the passing game and ended the year with 29 receptions for 166 yards.

This signing was meant to mark the end of Conner’s run with the Steelers, pointed out by ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor earlier this year .

« While Conner is a fan favorite for his community connections and fight against cancer, he’s unlikely to be re-signed and the Steelers need a new number 1 back, » Pryor wrote on ESPN. “Snell struggled to cast that role consistently when Conner was injured, and neither McFarland nor Samuels have a # 1 makeup. The Steelers will be in the market to add a new face, probably through an early selection in draft. ”

Conner remains a free agent at this point in the off-season. It’s unclear where he’ll end up, but he should be able to find a new home if his contract requirements are reasonable.

As for the Steelers, the offensive appears to be ready for 2021. The receiving corps continues to consist of Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster, while the backcourt consists of Ballage, Anthony McFarland and Benny Snell.
