Back in 2008, the Marine Corps band leader Brian Dix had the idea of composing a symphonic piece called « Madam President » just in case then Sen. Hillary Clinton won the race for the presidency. Thirteen years later, just in time for today’s inauguration in Washington, DC, the San Diego resident finally premiered a new version of the play.
The brisk 5-minute march, recently renamed « Madam (Vice) President », was posted online on Sunday in honor of former California Senator Kamala Harris, who is sworn in as America’s first female Vice President today.
To record the video, Dix recruited 45 female musicians from across California to volunteer to film their music departments. These videos were then compiled and produced into a finished film by Arts Laureate, a recording studio that flourished last year producing « virtual » concerts with quarantined musicians. The video can be viewed online at youtube.com/user/artslaureate/videos.
Dix, who lives in South Park with his husband Paul Andrews, served as a musician and bandleader in the military for 30 years. From 1998 until his retirement in December 2015, Dix was the director of the US Navy Drum & Bugle Corps in Washington, DC, an ensemble also known as « The Commandant’s Own ». During these years he composed almost 180 pieces for the band, including 15 original works.
One of these originals is a series Dix, which was composed in honor of American heroes and to which « Madam President » would have belonged. When Barack Obama received the Democratic nomination in 2008, Dix said he put the « madam » idea « in the old piano bench in my head. » Then, when several women, including Harris, announced runs for the presidency last spring, Dix decided to end the play. « Madam President » was slated to premiere with the Rhode Island Philharmonic in 2020, but the pandemic resulted in the concert being canceled and « Madam » went back into mothballs.
Then on November 3rd, when the state of Arizona turned blue and the Election for the Biden Harris ticket tipped, Dix said his husband walked into the room and told him to change the name of the piece. Less than a minute later, Bramwell called Tovey, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, with the same suggestion.
Dix said the title wasn’t entirely inaccurate for Harris, having served as Vice President also as President of the U.S. Senate will act. Instead, he added the word « Vice » in brackets to the title so that ensembles could choose which name to use when performing.
Dix said, « Woman (Vice President) is not a political statement. Instead, it is » those extraordinary Dedicated to women entering the American political arena « . To give the piece the right musical tone, he added lively jazz and swing elements to it.
» It has to be spirited, and the momentum there is what Women do when they are alone in the boardroom. You have to spice things up, ”he said. “Women are the ones who shave the corners to move them forward. This is for everyone. “
Since Dix didn’t have an orchestra to premier the piece in time for the inauguration, he decided to do it himself a few weeks ago, with the voluntary help of two other marine veterans, the owner / producer of the Arts Laureate, Christian Amonson , and the film editor Stephen Bulla. In order to recruit the musicians, Dix took advice from two conductors, Sarah Weber and Sonia Marie De León de Vega. He then worked around the clock by phone and email to recruit musicians from San Diego to Santa Clarita to San Jose.
These musicians include professional percussionist Heather Barclay from Escondido, who appeared in the film snare drum and Basin plays. Barclay said she was amazed at how quickly the technically challenging project came about and how « amazing » it had become. She called it an honor to be part of it.
« It’s wonderful, » she said. « I was on the project because history is being made in the US and women are breaking the glass ceiling. »
Since its premiere on YouTube three days ago, “Madam (Vice) President” has received more than 4,200 views. Dix said he was happy to give Americans something to smile about during exceptionally dark times.
« It was amazing, » he said. “Music actually goes beyond politics. I’ve seen this over and over again. When I worked in the Marine Corps, we played overseas in places where music was needed and that really made a difference. Good music goes much further than a PowerPoint and a couple of cocktail viennese. “
