The McLaren rebirth and its continued advances in Formula 1 are the focus of this week’s Autosport magazine today (February 4th).

Schnitzer Motorsport, a touring car and sports car squad that has won multiple championships, is to be liquidated and is preparing to sell its assets after BMW Motorsport has decided not to extend its contract for 2021.

The team was a dominant force in pewter tops in the 1980s and 1990s, won European, worldwide, German and Italian titles with Roberto Ravaglia between 1986 and 1991 and won the Le Mans 24 Hours in a BMW V12 LMR in 1999.

More recently, it has focused on GT races and won the 2018 Macau GT World Cup with Augusto Farfus.

However, the 50-year collaboration with BMW ended with the Bavarian brand’s announcement in December to support customers -GT racing programs for the last homologation year of their venerable M6 GT3 to be shortened.

This puts the future of the family-run Schnitzer Motorsport team in danger, and team boss Herb ert Schnitzer Jr. has now confirmed that the team is « currently completing the liquidation ».

He told Autosport that « certain things have already been sold » and that a full catalog of assets is in the process of being drawn up.

» Our hearts really bleed, « he said. « We spent more time together than with our families in some cases – apart from me, because it’s my family. »

Schnitzer said he hopes to find a buyer who can keep the team together.

« The only way to avert the end is if a buyer comes along who takes over a large part of the business and the staff, » he said.

« Then the buyer can still decide whether to rent or buy the site or wants to open a new one. That would be the only chance to avert this.

« It’s really about someone buying it and reviving it in a different form. The most important thing is that the people are taken over. «

Schnitzer added that the right to use the family name to ensure its continuation in motorsport is also up for discussion.

» If someone is considered a Schnitzer and wants to do motorsport with our logo, there is still a chance afterwards, « he said.

» Then he would have to buy new equipment. But he would have to take over the people – that is also the legal basis.

« But since we will also sell our memorabilia and trophies at some point, it would be good if this buyer came early because that is our story.

« So if someone comes now, we would stop our preparations for the sales presentation. Hope dies last. «
