World news – The Torrey Pines South Course is tough for farmers, but not tough for the US Open

The South Course is usually a beast, but it's a little more non-Jewish during Farmers Week than when hosting a US Open.

SAN DIEGO – Brooks Koepka realized that his main motivation for the Farmers Insurance Open this week was to get an early look at Torrey Pines ahead of the US Open on the South Course in June.

Koepka isn’t the only player using the Farmers as a scouting trip, and while conditions this week may not match those of June, the South Course has proven to be an important test no matter what time of year it is « I think in a solid year for the Farmers Insurance Open it will play a bit like a major, » said Marc Leishman, who won the event last year. “The good thing about knowing this course as well as I do is the green. The breaks do not change on the greens. They have the greens for this tournament just as quickly as they do for the US Open. “

Distance and speed numbers hit the headlines, but many players hope that improving other areas of their games will bring trophies.

Last year, the South Course was the seventh hardest up with an average of 72.53 strokes the PGA Tour. At the 2008 US Open in Torrey Pines, the average score was 73.8. « This year for the US Open is going to be very tight, very fast, » said Leishman. « I think the rough will go up. » I think it will be difficult, it will play like another golf course. «

Xander Schauffele can call Torrey Pines at home but the Farmers Insurance Open has not been kind to him.

Kamaiu Johnson’s PGA Tour debut has to wait after testing positive for COVID-19 in front of the Farmers.

Distance and speed numbers hit the headlines, but many gamers hope that improving other areas of their games will bring trophies.
