World news – Top Gun: Maverick Says NO to Streaming Services – Y.M.Cinema – News & Insights into Digital Cinema

Tom Cruise is dumping all of his chips in theaters, or at least for now, as Paramount is refusing to sell Top Gun: Maverick to streaming services due to its box office potential. It reminds us of Christopher Nolan’s tenet dilemma. It all depends on the battle between COVID and the vaccine. Hopefully we’ll explore this action-packed IMAX masterpiece on the giant screen this summer. Read on.

The original release date of the film was July 12, 2019. It would have been released a week after Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019) and a week before The Lion King (2019). According to IMDB, on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, about a month or two after filming began, the release date was postponed to June 26, 2020, removing one of the most anticipated films of 2019. On April 2, 2020, Paramount announced that it would postpone the film by six months to December 23, 2020 due to the Covid19 pandemic. It was recently postponed again to July 2021. It all depends on the fight between COVID and the vaccine. After analyzing the situation, offers from streaming services are falling on the table.

According to a new report by the WSJ, streaming services like Netflix and Apple TV were curious whether Paramount would be ready to sell Top Gun: Maverick. However, sources say the studio wouldn’t even consider doing this due to the huge box office revenue Maverick is expected to bring in. When examining the results of other blockbusters like Tenet and WW84, the decision to wait might be wise. For example, WW84 cannot be defined as a great success in terms of the streaming option. I mean, this film was shot with IMAX and film cameras and was planned and designed to be shown on the giant screen, nothing less.

The solution to opt out of streaming services is the right one. There is still plenty of time until July, so there is a significant chance the theaters will reopen. Technically, Top Gun: Maverick was shot for the IMAX experience. In fact, this is the first release (along with Dune) to be certified as “Filmed in IMAX”. This is IMAX’s new program with the aim of working with the world’s leading camera manufacturers to set the standards required to meet filmmakers’ demands for The IMAX Experience® (Read more: IMAX launches the “Filmed In IMAX” program ( welcomes ARRI, RED, Panavision and Sony). Top Gun: Maverick production has put together a special camera system of six Sony VENICE 6K cinema cameras in a fighter jet cockpit to enhance and enhance the cinema experience (read more: Top Gun : Maverick – Six Sony VENICE cameras in a fighter jet cockpit).

The cameras from Sony Venice were specially adapted for the film sequence in order to record the cockpit sequences, whereby the sensor could become detached from the body via a fiber optic cable allowed the cameras to fit into the tight spaces required, with the body inserted into the mechanics of the jet, now you understand why the scream one option will be a bad solution for this film.

Personally, I don’t care to wait another 2 years to see it properly in a theater it belongs in. The decision to say « NO » to streaming services is the right one and it will help save theaters and enable them to get back to business after the COVID saga is over. Think differently? Comment below.
