Multiple tornadoes swept through eastern Alabama when a sodden storm hit Pulled northeast across the state on Thursday afternoon, damaging structures, and telling officials to warn residents to stay inside and off the highways.

A house in town has been reduced to little more than lighting, according to a tweeted photo.
In South Birmingham, a young meteorology student said his life was gone before his eyes when a tornado grazed his house.
« A tornado just hit our house in south Birmingham, » tweeted Alex Roberts, a self-described « meteorologist in training ». « We’re fine, but our terrace is destroyed. I’m just so glad we survived, » he wrote.
« I feel spared. I’ve never seen my life flash so fast … it’s much more scary when you are with your family and not hunting. I will post updates later. «
In Shelby County, veteran meteorologist James Spann kept reporting the weather, even when a tornado hit his home and wreaked havoc.
