The Stuart Highway in the far north of the state will remain closed for up to a week after the road surface was badly damaged by the crash and subsequent fire.
The driver of the Ute – a 23-year-old ACT man – and a passenger in the truck – a 57-year-old woman from Para Vista in South Australia – died on the scene.
The truck driver, a 49-year-old man, also from Para Vista, was taken to the Royal in critical condition Adelaide Hospital.
The two deaths bring the death toll on South Australian roads this year to 20 compared to 17 last year.
Traffic going north on the Stuart Highway will be diverted into Pimba, and vehicles, those traveling south towards Adelaide will be diverted at Coober Pedy.
