Two people were killed Tuesday afternoon when a large fireworks display exploded, started a fire, and sent a massive cloud of smoke into the sky in a home in Southern California.
Ray Gayk, Ontario chief fire officer, said the fire department had Received multiple reports of explosions in a residential area around 12:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived on site, the house was on fire amid a series of large explosions, said Gayk, who described the fireworks as the type that would be used in a pyrotechnic display.
« It was very obvious that we had a lot of commercial fireworks, « he told reporters during a news conference. « We don’t currently know where they came from [or] what was going on in the house. »
Officials evacuated residents in the immediate area, including people who were in the house where the fireworks went, Police Chief Mike said Lorenz. According to official reports, two horses and a dog were also rescued from the area.

The people who died have not yet been identified, Gayk said, adding it was not immediately clear how they were related to the explosion .

Fireworks are illegal in the city of Ontario, according to Lorenz, who Reporters said charges are possible. He added that police had previously received complaints about people setting off fireworks in the area, but not about their homes.
« Because of the large explosion, it would at least be an investigation into one or more crimes involved « said Lorenz. « Depending on which cache of fireworks or explosives they were in, we will direct the investigation where it is going. »
Gayk said the fire department bombing squad cleared the area to make sure no additional explosives were in the house. He said it would probably take days to clean up all of the debris.
