Tyrone McKenna says he was « disappointed » after a chance to fight when key support for Carl Frampton’s historic quest in Dubai failed tonight.
‘The Mighty Celt’ should be Zhankosh Turarov to challenge his intercontinental WBO welterweight title, but the Khazakhstan champion has retired.
The news was confirmed early Saturday morning (UK time). The fight was scheduled for 9 p.m. (UK time), right before Frampton fights Jamel Herring in Dubai.
There was an issue during yesterday’s weigh-in when McKenna comfortably hit the 140 pound limit with Turarov and nowhere was seen. Instead, he sweated out the last ounces that took up to the two-hour time limit when he hit the target.
He was hoping to get back on his feet after defeating Ohara Davies with a razor-thin point decision the last time Ohara Davies had lost.
The 31-year-old Belfast boxer jumped back against a boxer with a perfect record of 24 wins from 24 professional fights, including 17 knockout games.
« I’m ready for that War and for everything that Turarov brings, « he had declared. « I’ve heard a lot of people say this is a risky fight for me, but I want to change people’s mind that they shouldn’t be afraid to fight these fights. Risk creates rewards. »
On the last one Turned down Thursday’s press conference, Turarov McKenna said: « People may say he’s taller and a south paw, but I train with south paw boxers all the time so it doesn’t get too difficult. It’ll just be a win. » « »
