Officers from the Murray River Police District have opened an investigation into the death of a 19-year-old woman in a boating accident in Deniliquin in the southwest of the state earlier today
Around 230h (Sunday 11 October 2020) emergency services were called on the Edward River near Deniliquin, following reports that a boat had struck a tree partially submerged in the river
The boat, described as a 4-foot flat-bottomed fishing boat, sustained significant damage after hitting the tree. The two people on the boat, a 29-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both hit their heads on the boat and passed out
Shortly after, the man regained consciousness and managed to attract the attention of nearby residents, who contacted the police
Residents and a fisherman began CPR on the woman until first responders arrived The woman was pronounced dead at the scene
