Adam Saad wants to be traded to Carlton

AFLcomau understands that Saad is informing the Bombers and his teammates of his wish to cross town and join the Blues as of next season

Until the last few days, the Bombers had been hopeful of securing the out-of-contract defender, but he had indicated he wanted to join Carlton who edged North Melbourne for his services

This is another important recruitment for the Blues, who have already won the pledge of Giants restricted free agent Zac Williams to join the club before 2021

Saad, 26, was considering moving to Carlton at the end of the 2017 season before selecting the Bombers when he returned to Victoria after two years at the Gold Coast

Discussions with the Bombers over a new long-term deal for Saad had been stalled in recent months, and although he received an offer of up to five years, he decided his future was far from Tullamarine

Saad had asked for clarification on his role at the Bombers under new coach Ben Rutten after being forced to play as a lockdown defender in the later stages of 2020

It’s another big blow for the Bombers who lost Saad’s half-back Conor McKenna after choosing to return home to Ireland last month

Free agent Joe Daniher assesses his future as well, while contract striker Orazio Fantasia plans to move to South Australia

Last October, a deal leading ruckman Andrew Phillips from Carlton to Essendon was the first trade between the two sides since Justin Murphy crossed paths with the Bombers in exchange for Cory McGrath in 2003

The Blues currently have the 7, 27 and 45 picks in the opening rounds of this year’s NAB AFL Draft

After several years of underutilization of the salary cap, the Blues were able to spend money chasing players from rival clubs

According to AFL rules, if a club spends as little as 95% of their cap in a season, they have three years to spend up to 105%, and no more

This was one of the main reasons for Jack Martin’s long-term contract for the Blues in 2020 and allowed them to continue – but not succeed – Tom Papley of Sydney and Stephen Coniglio of Greater Western Sydney

The Blues have also had a recent wave of re-signing, including key names Marc Murphy and Levi Casboult for next season as well as Jacob Weitering (2025), Sam Docherty, Lachie Plowman, Zac Fisher (2023) and Caleb Marchbank (2022))
