In a recent discovery, a coral the size of a skyscraper found in the Great Barier Reef of Australia is larger than the size of the Empire Building, USA
The ‘detached’ reef was the first to be discovered in over 120 years off Cape York in northern Queensland The reef is approximately 15 km long and rises from 500 meters to 40 meters underwater It is
A detached reef is embedded in the ocean floor and is not part of the main great barrier reef
The reef was estimated to be 20 million years old and is among a cluster of seven similar reefs, which were mapped in the 1800s, ABC News reports
The reef was discovered on October 20 as part of Australia’s 12-month ocean mapping project
The team collected the reef samples using an underwater robot called ‘SuBastian’
Measuring a whooping cough of 1,640 feet, the reef is taller than the Eiffel Tower and the French Shard – Britain’s tallest building – which are 1,063 and 1,016 feet respectively, reports the Daily Mail
As part of this underwater project, researchers also discovered a series of unknown aquatic species, including the world’s longest recorded sea creature called a siphonophore, a jellyfish-like creature 148 feet in the sea. Ningaloo canyon

This new discovery will further help scientists and researchers study the Great Barrier Reef and the impact of the recent reef on it
In another event, recent research presented another grim report regarding the creation of nature, the Great Barrier Reef
According to the Australian Research Council’s Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, based in Townsville, famed natural beauty near Australia has lost half of its corals in the past 25 years The study assessed the communities and size of corals between 1995 and 2017 and found that the number of small, medium and large corals fell by more than 50%
Lead author of the study, Andreas Dietzel, said the main cause of unfortunate coral death was human-induced climate change which affected the enabling environment necessary for corals to exist
