World News – UA – « Cowards »: Australia reacts to NRL national anthem backflip

A host of leading sports commentators have spoken out after the NRL returns on a plan to suppress the national anthem of Origin

The NRL has been gang-attacked by several prominent commentators after an embarrassing day that saw it backtrack on its intention to remove the national anthem from its State of Origin series

Prime Minister Scott Morrison stepped in to ensure Advance Australia Fair is played ahead of this year’s matches between NSW and Queensland after a furious reaction to the NRL decision

Sky News host Chris Smith said the NRL had « taken the cowardly path » with its initial decision to ban the anthem, which was « one of the most pathetic decisions ever made by a sports organization «

“A group of players of indigenous descent refused to sing the anthem last year in protest against the white invasion of Australia,” he said. “So to avoid any embarrassment, (Andrew, CEO of the NRL) Abdo took the cowardly path and banned the anthem altogether »

“The Australian anthem will now be played as it should be,” Smith added. “Regarding the position taken by some indigenous actors, the NRL holds an indigenous tour every year, has a long history of giving qualified indigenous actors with opportunities they would not normally receive, and the charitable work of the code in indigenous communities is unparalleled

« These players should use their status to unite black and white and commemorate the indigenous history of the code, and not divide young fans of the game and make the NRL feel guilty by no longer celebrating this great country »

« Why the NRL keeps trying to position itself on political issues is something the game hasn’t explained, » Kent wrote

« Sports codes should represent everyone and not decide who is right or wrong, nor force those who love their game to rally to a political position they do not support

« Nobody tells NRL fans if they should vote Liberal or Labor, and the rest of the policy should be the same »

“It’s an event of national significance and it’s our national anthem,” he tweeted “The audience has spoken and I’m glad the NRL has rethought… This year more than ever, we must be united «

« Advance Australia Fair is divisive and offensive, » he tweeted, « I feel uncomfortable every time it is played because of the harm it causes to Indigenous Australians. deeply attached to this for a long time and I will continue to try to educate others «

Sydney Morning Herald columnist Peter FitzSimons has targeted Morrison for saying it has never been so important to come together and sing the anthem after a year of ‘struggle and heartache’

« Yes, Prime Minister After a very difficult year of plague and plague, lockdown and a sluggish economy, making the league players sing the national anthem will improve the situation, » he wrote

“Personally, I think the national anthem should be played in the home state,” he tweeted, “But a prime minister calling for it to be played gives the impression of shed weight «

Sports fans: « Sport has no place for politics » * ScoMo calls V’Landys and tells him the NRL should play the national anthem at the Origin

NSW coach Brad Fittler was not bothered by the decision « I’m not good at politics, I try to stay out of it », he says

« If they play it, they play it If they don’t, they don’t We are here for a game of football

« I think it’s about time the scenery has changed a bit, maybe revise the words or take a look, where they ask everyone in Australia »

News from the poll that asked readers if the national anthem should be dropped for the home state received over 11,000 votes and was 80% in favor of keeping the anthem
