Firefighting teams will work overnight to contain a massive bushfire in southern Sydney, with the blaze out of control on Saturday afternoon
Fire burns in Royal National Park on the east side of the Princes Highway, south of Heathcote
It is understood that the blaze started after a localized fire broke the containment lines of a controlled risk reduction burn at around 1 p.m.

The point fire quickly got out of control and turned into a 200 hectare blaze, with firefighters calling in a water bombing plane on Saturday afternoon to help contain the blaze
The fire caused significant delays on the Princes Highway as traffic was backed up in both directions for hours
Parts of the freeway and surrounding roads were closed intermittently throughout the afternoon, with motorists being advised to delay their trip or take an alternate route
Train services in the area have also been temporarily suspended, with buses replacing trains on the T4 line from the Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra and the south coast between Sutherland and Waterfall
The fire is now burning in a northeast direction, crews continue to work overnight
There is currently no threat to properties in the area and the Princes’ Route is open in both directions
