World News – UA – Everyone Hates Chris (es)

This week, for no legitimate reason, the internet decided to reignite the debate on Hemsworth, Pratt, Evans and Pine

The Monitor is a weekly column devoted to everything that happens in the world of WIRED culture, from movies to memes, from TV to Twitter

You know what? Fuck Chris Screw it into his beautiful chiseled, overpaid, undershaven face I moved on I don’t care how many summer blockbusters he plays in This guy can really fold

Phew It felt good You know what I mean? If I’m wrong, tell me I’m wrong, but I’m sick of this guy, am I? Wait, what is this? Don’t you know which Chris I’m talking about? Oh, well, let me tell you: these are all

Yes, in case the full facetious nature of this intro isn’t obvious, it’s about the fact that the internet has decided this week to have its umpteenth fight over which of the Hollywood Chrises – Hemsworth, Pratt, Evans or The Pine is Most Hateful Social media being what it is, it’s hard to fully understand why anyone thought it was a good use of everyone’s time – especially because, you know, there’s a lot more going on – but Vulture’s Rebecca Alter points out this tweet (below) from TV screenwriter Amy Berg as Patient Zero in the latest Chriscourse (Plus, it’s been tweeted like 14,000 times , so if this tweet isn’t the source, that means there’s an even more popular article on the Chris debate and we’re really in hell)

Now this tweet is mostly pictures, but please, if you will, just focus on the text: « We have to go » This is where Berg made his biggest mistake Got to go? Yo, what about the four? Why not play F, Marry, Kill, add a fourth option – Ignore – and pick the last one for each of these guys and call it a day?

To be clear, this essay is not meant to be a jab against any of these guys or their careers. No harm is meant here, to them or their reputation Pine was great in Wonder Woman! Hemsworth is perhaps the most self-aware Himbo to decorate the screen since, uh, Brad Pitt (?)! Pratt must be someone’s cup of tea! WIRED put Evans on the cover for god’s sake! They all have their pros and cons, and it’s not their fault that they all have the same name and similar characteristics, and – for a good chunk of the twenty teens – have dominated summer blockbusters. everyone was starting to call them by their character names – James T Kirk-Pine, Thor Hemsworth, Star-Lord Pratt and America’s Ass Evans – it’s possible their homogeneity has escaped public scrutiny entirely

And yet, it didn’t. As the argument unfolded over the week, it quickly turned into a commentary on whether or not the worst Chris was the one named Pratt, largely because of his personal opinions (It’s a long story, but Pratt would attend Zoe Church in Los Angeles, which has ties to the Hillsong mega-church, which has been accused of being anti-LGBTQ. Pratt, however, said, « Nothing could be further from the truth I go to a church that opens its doors to absolutely everyone ») This then became the cause of several of his Marvel co-stars, including Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana – to come to his defense

Well that’s nice of them Meanwhile, others – clearly finished with the Chrises debate – have moved on to guys with other names

On Thursday it was all both spinning and spitting (It got so derailed that YouPorn sent out a press release with data on Chris being the most popular based on user searches on the site It was Evans, by a landslide not that that matters) But even on the decrease, it’s important to note why this was a tired exercise to begin with. The original discussion on Hollywood Chrises was a way to draw attention to the fact that so many tent poles were led by white people of similar appearance But, as Alter pointed out in his play, « Movies like Black Panther and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have made the term ‘Marvel movie’ much less white and seamless than what the Chrises once symbolized. … To continue to fix myself on these four tasteless vanilla wafers, it is to perpetuate their centrality in Hollywood, and me, I prefer not «

So tell us all. Also, the original tweet that started the debate left out an important “Chris” – Kristen Stewart – and it is, as writer and critic Jason Bailey pointed out, the conversation people should be having

WIRED is where tomorrow comes true It is the essential source of information and ideas that make sense of a constantly changing world The WIRED Conversation illustrates how technology is changing all aspects of our lives – from culture to business, from science to design The breakthroughs and innovations we discover are leading to new ways of thinking, new connections and new industries
