Johnson, who is among the top five Australian wicket takers in Test, ODI and T20I formats, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August 2018

But Johnson on Monday night revealed that during a tour of South Africa in 2011 he had « gotten to the point where I didn’t appreciate being a professional cricketer, » adding that he was « taking all personally ”and had not done like being judged all the time

Speaking during a raw segment on Channel 7’s SAS Australia, Johnson opened up about mental health issues, which he said started before he retired from the game

« I found it more difficult since I retired from cricket All of a sudden you don’t do as much You lose your goal a bit, » he says

« I sometimes find it hard to trust myself I’m in this transition now where I haven’t played cricket for about two years »

When asked if he found the transition difficult, Johnson replied: « Yes, many times I found out that I had depression but I think depression was something I had even from a young age

« He (cricket) kind of blocked things off It kind of hid the depression, but there were a lot of times you would go back to your room and you are away from your family and you start to linger on things

« Thanks to my cricket career, I just took care of it (depression) It’s just about me moving on and taking it upon myself to be active with certain things, to keep my mind moving »

Johnson said the hardest times are often when he has too much free time

« You have times when you are struggling really badly and it can be difficult when you have a lot of time to think about things, » he said

« You have no control and your mind starts playing tricks on you, you start to think about the worst »
