Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci sensational won a French MotoGP Grand Prix on wet ground ahead of Honda rookie Alex Marquez, while title rivals Fabio Quartararo and Joan Mir struggled

A heavy downpour moments before the start of the race resulted in a brief delay, with the race soon being declared wet for the first time since the 2018 Valencia GP

LCR’s Cal Crutchlow held the lead very briefly on the way up the hill to the Dunlop Chicane, but it was Pramac’s Jack Miller who took the lead at Turn 3

A crash for Valentino Rossi forced his Yamaha teammate Maverick Vinales, Suzuki’s Mir and Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro to avoid getting through the opening chicane – dropping Vinales and Mir out of the points

Amid the chaos, Andrea Dovizioso and Petrucci of the Ducatis factory had settled behind Miller, with pole-sitter Quartararo fourth, but he soon came under immense pressure from those behind him as he he was wrestling on his Petronas SRT Yamaha in his first wet MotoGP race

Petrucci made his way through Miller at the Blue Esses towards the end of the first round, Dovizioso quickly following him

The leading Ducati trio quickly formed a buffer for the chase pack, which was quickly led by Alex Rins on the Suzuki, which climbed fourth from 16th on the grid on lap four once his tires were down. medium rain rises at temperature

Rins then started chasing the Ducatis, and by lap 11 he was less than a second behind Miller

The Suzuki finally found a way to pass Miller on lap 15 at turn 3, but was passed back to Garage Vert just a moment later

On lap 18, Dovizioso managed to take the lead from Petrucci in the race around the first corner and withstood a counterattack at Garage Vert

The two Ducatis exited the double right-hander side by side and touched on the next turn, while Rins launched inside Dovizioso to take second place behind Petrucci

Miller’s charge would come to a cruel end just one lap later when his Pramac GP20 expired on the next lap, while Rins would crash into second at Turn 3 on the next lap.

This gave Petrucci a 27-second buffer on Dovizioso, although his teammate quickly cleared that gap, while Marquez on his first wet run

Petrucci’s lead fell to 12s on lap 23, but Dovizioso started to suffer from a lack of rear grip and was powerless to prevent Marquez from moving to La Chapelle the next time around.

Petrucci’s lead remained intact on the last lap, and the Ducati rider crossed the finish line for his second MotoGP victory, making him the seventh different winner this season

Rookie Marquez gave Honda their first podium in 2020 by finishing second after starting 18th, while Pol Espargaro completed the stand on the KTM after stealing Dovizioso late

Dovizioso managed to take fourth place despite his rear tire fading, with Johann Zarco fifth on the Avintia Ducati at home ahead of Tech3’s Miguel Oliveira

Takaaki Nakagami finished seventh at the head of LCR Honda from RC213V factory rider Stefan Bradl, while Quartararo pushed back Vinales and Mir on the last lap to reclaim the ninth

Quartararo further extends its championship lead to 10 points over Mir, with Dovizioso 18 points adrift and one without Vinales

Brad Binder’s first wet race on the KTM ended in 12th position, while Francesco Bagnaia could not compete with the form of his fellow Ducati in 13th on his Pramac GP20 Aleix Espargaro and Iker Lecuona from Tech3 scored the last points

SRT’s Franco Morbidelli crashed after falling to the back of the peloton early on, as there were crashes for Crutchlow, Aprilia’s Bradley Smith and Avintia’s Tito Rabat
