One man has been shot, another is on the run, and heavily armed police stormed property on the central NSW coast after a high-speed car chase this morning
The ABC understands the operation, which started around 900 a.m. when officers started following two men in a vehicle, remains serious and ongoing
The men are believed to have both been armed with rifles and started shooting at police before a standoff unfolded on a semi-rural property in Hamlyn Terrace
One was shot, but the other is still on the run with tactical police scouring the bush behind Warnervale Public School
Officers have surrounded a house at the address and are in place behind cars and other structures on rural property, guns drawn
The school remains closed, while residents in the surrounding area have been urged to stay inside their homes and lock their doors
Aerial images appear to show a body on the ground on the property, covered with a leaf
Motorists are warned to avoid the area, and several roads around the property have been closed
Several police cars were seen driving up the Pacific Highway towards the central coast, with their sirens on
The New South Wales Police Association said it was aware of the « critical incident » and had representatives on the scene to support its members who « are safe »
In a statement, a police spokesperson said the dead had not yet been officially identified
They said the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident and that this investigation will be independently reviewed
The spokesperson also said that the police operation to find the second man had continued and that he had left the scene
