Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) Chairman Peter V’landys has spoken out on State of Origin national anthem ban before flashback on controversial decision

« It was never meant to be political, so as soon as it became political, we overturned the decision, » V’landys told Sunrise on Friday

The ARLC received a backlash from fans after announcing plans to remove the anthem from the upcoming Origin series, with many accusing the athletic body of giving in to pressure from activists

But V’landys claimed it wasn’t, saying they initially decided there was no need to sing Advance Australia Fair at interstate matches

« We felt that there was a state rivalry between Queensland and New South Wales and that we would play the national anthem at our grand final, international matches and our Anzac matches « , he explained

V’landys said a phone call from Scott Morrison also influenced his decision to overturn the ban

« What the Prime Minister basically said is that Australia has been through a lot this year – we’ve been through bushfires, we’re in a pandemic – and that we need the national anthem to State of Origin «

The ARLC president also addressed criticism from indigenous activists and players who wanted the song deleted, saying he “absolutely” understood their point of view and had “the utmost respect for them «

« We believe in individual rights and if these players wish to do their own retest during a match, we welcome that, » he said.

« We want to get away from politics and all the other stresses in our lives, we don’t need it at sporting events »
