Matt Scharenberg and Tim Broomhead won’t be Magpies next year but both hope to play at other clubs

COLLINGWOOD has struck out former Top 10 pick Matt Scharenberg and defenseman Tim Broomhead after their careers were derailed by serious injuries in recent seasons

Scharenberg, who was taken to No6 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, has undergone three knee reconstructions in his seven seasons at the Magpies The most recent came towards the end of 2018, his most productive season in which he played 17 games before sorely missing the club’s final campaign

The 25-year-old has played a total of 41 games for Collingwood, with three coming in 2020

Broomhead played eight seasons at Collingwood after joining the club as a first-round pick in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft

He looked set to solidify his place in the squad at the start of 2018, but a badly broken leg against Greater Western Sydney in the second round of this season kept him from playing for almost two years.

Broomhead returned to the side in Round 11 this year against Adelaide but couldn’t hold his place on the squad, finishing with 37 black and white games

The delisted duo join retired trio Ben Reid, Travis Varcoe and Lynden Dunn as confirmed departures from Collingwood’s roster ahead of the trade and free will period
