There was a constant flow of voters at the Kingaroy State High School polling station this morning
With ECQ data revealing that just under half of Nanango voters still had not voted today, an electoral official told the South Burnett Times that around 400 votes were cast just in high school before midday
Party volunteers outside the station also said they were surprised by the constant flow of voters passing through the gates.
Greens volunteer Emily Grace said she didn’t expect the number of voters still coming to vote that day.
“I heard 70% of the people (had already voted) so that’s probably more than I expected,” Ms. Grace said.
Ms Grace has been volunteering for the Greens for five years now and said she was surprised both by the number of voters who still seemed to make up their minds to go to the voting booths – but also by the positive interactions that were taking place. ‘she had with voters
“Obviously it’s not some kind of extremely green area per se – but I have noticed that there seems to be a bit more warming towards the Greens more people are coming near me,” she said.
Five candidates are running for the seat of Nanango, including incumbent MP and Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington
Ms Frecklington sits in the seat by a margin of over 13% and she is unlikely to face any real challenge at the polls today
Its tougher battle will likely be that of government demand, with a Newspoll on the eve of the election showing Labor hold a small two-favored party lead over the LNP, 515 percent to 485 percent
Ms Frecklington has spent the morning hitting the streets of Townsville, including breaking away from tradition to vote for her constituency of Nanango over 1,300 miles away
