Brooklyn Nets hire former Houston Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni and Ime Udoka as assistant coaches, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski

Mike D’Antoni and Ime Udoka are finalizing deals to become assistant coaches under Steve Nash with the Brooklyn Nets, according to sources at ESPN Ensemble, D’Antoni and Nash were the architects of the offense in seven seconds or less with the Phoenix Suns in the mid-2000s

D’Antoni told the Rockets in September (following another disappointing Los Angeles Lakers second-round playoff) that he would not return to the squad after four seasons at the helm, choosing instead to become a free player agent trainer

And while he has a lot of experience as a head coach and is highly regarded throughout the league, D’Antoni’s final decision to become a key assistant on the Nets is not not so surprising considering his relationship with his first bench boss Steve Nash, whom he coached on the famous Phoenix Suns “Seven Seconds or Less” in the mid-2000s

This Suns team led the way in the rhythm and space era that has long revolutionized the league, giving way to hyper-realized versions like Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors With the architects of that original attack on board (not to mention Amar’e Stoudemire, who also played in these teams), and two powerful offensive players, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, set to lead the way on the pitch, the Nets are looking to be a considerable force for the 2020-21 season

Udoka spent last season with the Philadelphia 76ers as an assistant, and seven years on Gregg Popovich’s staff in San Antonio. He has been interviewed for several head coaching jobs in the past, and is another well-regarded name

With Jacque Vaughn also selected as an assistant coach, Nash and the Nets have built a solid and experienced staff for his first season as a head coach
