Declan Rice will ignore Chelsea’s interest in him and spend « several years » at West Ham, says Hammers coach Stuart Pearce
A move across London for Rice has been considered, with Chelsea keen to set up a reunion for a player who has already spent time in his academy system
No deal has been reached as Frank Lampard has landed a number of other players and a highly regarded England international remains in the East End
Pearce believes that will remain the case for the foreseeable future, with the former West Ham defender – now part of Davod Moyes’ backstage squad – backing Rice to stay put
He told the Sun: « I played football where I liked to play football and refused money to stay where I was happy
« My biggest driver was probably playing for the national team I have the same feeling now with Dec – he is extremely proud to represent England
« He will make his own decisions, but we are fortunate at West Ham to have a current captain called Mark Noble who has been here for several years and has shown great loyalty to the club
« I like to think that Dec will be at West Ham for years to come, leading the club to success »
Pearce added of a man who has taken the armband for hammers at times: « To be a captain what you need in abundance is selflessness You have to understand when it is. good for the team, even when it hurts your pride
« Declan is a selfless individual who puts the team ahead of himself That says it all at such a young age He is ready to do tasks for the team like most leaders are and that will benefit the team
« I wouldn’t say it stifles his game but he’s willing to do it for the greater good. In the position he’s playing in particular, we’re asking him for restraint
« All the excitement and all the glamor is at the front of the pitch in the main section All the hard work and clean sheets and dirty work is at the back of the team and so it is that the game is
« We know he has more goals in him than his record suggests but we ask him to do a job for the team, which is to sit in the back row and knit our game together and break the game
« He’s doing it not only for West Ham but for England as well, and that tells you everything He’s doing it at his age He’s still a very, very young man in football terms
« I don’t think it was in doubt that our football club wouldn’t sell him. He’s a fantastic young prospect at the club and is an integral part of everything David Moyes wants to accomplish here
