World News – UA – Roads and houses under water after major flood in South East Queensland

Brisbane’s inner streets are among flooded places after heavy rains over South East Queensland

Flash flood warnings have been issued amid a series of dangerous storms between the Darling Downs and the Sunshine Coast

Suburban Brisbane roads including South Brisbane, Yeronga, Woolloongabba, Kedron and Carseldine went underwater on Tuesday afternoon

This adds to the traffic chaos caused by a number of accidents on wet roads in Brisbane’s large network, with authorities urging patience

The state emergency service responded to around 70 calls between noon and 545 p.m. AEST, Acting Assistant Commissioner Brian Cox told 7NEWScomau

Most of the calls were about flooding between Caboolture and north Brisbane, including some in the Lockyer Valley, Cox said

Upper Lockyer, west of Brisbane, recorded 70mm of rain in an hour on Tuesday, while 80mm fell on Beachmere, near Caboolture, the Bureau of Meteorology reported

The office warns that a very dangerous thunderstorm has been detected near Caboolture and the north of Bribie Island, north of Brisbane, with residents of the areas being urged to take cover

Dangerous thunderstorms are also likely for Strathpine, Redcliffe, Kallangur, Mud Island, Lake Samsonvale and northern Moreton Bay

Severe thunderstorm warning remains in place for parts of Ipswich, Logan, Somerset, Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Redland City, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane City and Moreton Bay council areas

Previously, more than 60mm had been recorded in one hour at Helidon, near Toowoomba, and 48mm at Kalbar in the Scenic Rim

Areas near Gympie, north of the Sunshine Coast, have been hailed by numerous severe thunderstorms moving from the Toowoomba and South Burnett areas towards the coast

Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland, floods, hail
