North Melbourne senior coach Rhyce Shaw will leave football indefinitely and may not return as senior manager, the club revealed in a statement today

The 38-year-old coach, who had just completed his first full season at the helm of the Kangaroos, asked the club to take time off for personal reasons The request was granted, but the club have since accepted that his situation could prevent him from returning to the club in the same position

North Melbourne President Ben Buckley said the club were « aware of the speculation » about Shaw, but chose not to respond until today to « respect the wishes of Rhyce and his family »

« Rhyce asked for time and space away from football and we were supportive of him during that time

« In the meantime, we will move forward From the board’s perspective, our decision-making revolves around one ambition: how we can build a football team and program that will win our fifth flag « 

Shaw joined North Melbourne as an assistant coach in 2019, after three years as an assistant with the Sydney Swans After Brad Scott left his post in the middle of the year, Shaw was given the role guardian, before being promoted to the full-time role

Despite starting 2020 with two back-to-back wins, the wheels fell quickly for the Roos who only won just one of their remaining 15 games.The disastrous season led to an unprecedented cleanup, with the departure of six Assistant coaches, 11 off-list players and Ben Brown and Shaun Higgins put up for sale
