The National Gallery of Victoria plans to welcome Victorians again in spectacular style with NGV Triennial, a free exhibition of contemporary art, design and architecture

Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson today confirmed that the exhibition will run from December 19 to April 18, 2021 as part of the NGV summer program The exhibition will take over from NGV International on St Kilda Road, featuring works by over 100 artists, designers and collectives from 30 countries

Local and worldwide artists have been preparing works for the exhibition for the past few years, with 34 newly commissioned works set to be presented as world premieres as part of the triennial exhibition

From sculptures to painting, video works, architectural installations, photography and more, the exhibition will explore the issues of our time as seen through the eyes of artists from places such as County of Yolngu in Arnhem Land, Continental Europe, UK, South Africa, Hong Kong, New Zealand, USA, Japan, Turkey – and Victoria

Visitors can expect to see a 10-meter-high video work that uses artificial intelligence, machine learning and quantum computing by Turkish artist Refik Anadol and a giant mirror sculpture of the Roman goddess Venus by American artist Jeff Koons, alongside the work of Melbourne Fraternal architecture and photographer and artist Atong Atem

This year’s summer exhibition follows the 2017-2018 GNV Triennale which attracted over one2 million people and set a record as the most popular exhibition in the history of GNV L The exhibition will take place on all floors of NGV International, which will see exceptional contemporary works positioned alongside the Flemish, Dutch and British collections of the 17th and 18th centuries

The NGV team worked from home to prepare for the exhibit and will put in place public health measures to ensure the gallery is ready to welcome visitors again, including a COVIDSafe plan, timed ticket booth , hand disinfection stations and increased cleaning
