Six fantasy drug overdoses recorded over a 24-hour period prompted South Australian health authorities to issue an « extremely serious » warning to the community
The patients, aged 20 to 30, were admitted to Flinders Medical Center in the wee hours of the morning after taking the drug gamma hydroxybutyrate, also known as GHB or fantasy
Emergency services clinical director Dr Andrew Blyth said it was extremely unusual to have so many people admitted at once for the same reason
« We are concerned that there is more of this GHB in the community and are urgently warning anyone who has taken liquid medicine to report to the nearest emergency department immediately, even if they are feeling well and has no symptoms, « he said
« We know that an overdose of GHB can lead to cardio-respiratory arrest and the toxicity depends on the dose, the person’s weight, tolerance, individual sensitivity and other substances taken »
Symptoms of overdose include unconsciousness which can last for three to four hours, irregular or shallow breathing, fainting and memory loss, hallucinations and vomiting
