World News – UA – Wiggles apologizes for ‘rather offensive’ song on papadums

The frontman of veteran Australian children’s group The Wiggles apologized for a song that was criticized as racist

The video for ‘Pappadum’, first released in 2014, features the band singing about the titular food while dancing and wearing Indian style clothing

While all too familiar to many parents of young toddlers here and across Tasman, the song and video were recently discovered by social media users – who didn’t like it

« To be clear, this wasn’t the performance I wanted, » wrote Twitter user @_ashmip, sharing the video in a tweet that was viewed nearly 2 million times in just two days.

« This poor Indian dancer didn’t know what the audition was for and she looks legitimately horrified, » one person replied. «

« Can someone in the UK please do a parody version of white Australia where everyone wears flip flops and swimsuits and repeats » vegemite « over and over again with the same smile terrified?  » said a third

Someone asked Anthony Field, founder and the only remaining original member of the Wiggles, if this was his « creative idea »

« I wrote the song and directed the music video in 2014 (which was meant to be a celebration), » he said in a tweet

« I did not intend to be insensitive to Indian culture towards the Indian community or add value to ethnic stereotypes Apologies »

Some criticized the song for not featuring the singing of the Indian woman – in fact Indo-Australian Kimberley Stapylton, who is the band’s head of marketing and live events

« She wasn’t comfortable singing, but there was an intro where she brought us food and talked about dancing, » Field said

He said the band would seek input from different communities in the future to incorporate their culture into Wiggles songs

The Wiggles make songs inspired by various parts of the world, including traditional British and Irish tunes, songs from the Pacific Islands, and even one with Maori lyrics, written and performed with Kiwi artist Robert Rakate

« Don’t even worry about that bro, I can sort of see what you were aiming for and it sure could have been better but it wasn’t too too horrible lol » said one fan. « And honestly admit your mistakes like this shows growing «  Fruit salad  » slap again btw «
