NYON (Switzerland): A Romanian soccer referee was suspended for the season after making « inappropriate » comments about a black coach during a Champions League game. UEFA decided on Monday.
Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Başakşehir refused to continue playing on December 8th because the players believed that the fourth official Sebastian Coltescu had racist the Turkish club’s assistant coach Pierre Webo insulted.
A UEFA investigation resulted in Coltescu facing lesser charges of “improper conduct” for using the Romanian word for black “Negru” to identify Webo.
It is Coltescu forbidden « to act as a referee until the end of the 2020/21 season, » said UEFA, the Disciplinary Committee ruled. He must also take part in a training course recognized by UEFA.
« In an international context, correct language usage is essential to avoid situations like those in the match mentioned above, » said UEFA.
That Ban applies to domestic matches in Romania, as Coltescu is no longer on the FIFA-administered list of officials approved for international matches.
The Romanian Football Association decided ahead of the game in Paris not to propose Coltescu for 2021, and the tie between PSG and Başakşehir was his last international match.
The game ended 24 hours later with another group of match officers from the Netherlands.
