Lewis was born on Jan.. January 1915 in St. Lucia born. He was excellent at school at a young age and completed the curriculum in full by the age of 14.

In 1932, when he was finally old enough to take the exam, Lewis received a government scholarship to study at the London School of Economics, where he finally recognized business as his passion.

However, according to Lewis, he came to the school with the intention of studying business before moving to St. Lucia returned as racially discriminatory bans in British colonies at the time meant that black men could only go to school a lawyer or doctor « where they could make a living without government support ».

« I didn’t want to be a lawyer or a doctor. I wanted to be an engineer, but it seemed pointless because neither the government nor white companies would employ a black engineer, ”he explained in his biography published by Nobel Lectures.

Although Lewis didn’t know what business was at the beginning of his training, he eventually did a PhD in industrial economics. This degree helped him to his first apprenticeship position and made him the first member of the black faculty at the LSE.

However, some of his most important research did not take place until 1945 and 1950 when he became interested in the history of the world economy and development economics since 1870.

In addition to his future professorship at Princeton University, which made him the first black instructor, Lewis published numerous articles and books about his research that were instrumental in modeling the economies of developing countries.

During his career, Lewis has also served as a consultant to governments in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. In 1963 he was knighted by the British government for his achievements.

Lewis was born on Jan.. December Nobel Laureate when he was jointly awarded the prize for his economic research.

After his death at the age of 76 on Jan.. June 1991 Lewis was born on the grounds of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in St. Lucia, a university named in his honor.
