Shut down

Boris Johnson put nearly 18 million people in London and the Southeast under a Christmas lockdown (Toby Melville / PA)

At least and finally, our Stormont politicians have realized the reality of the Covid nightmare by ordering a draconian six-week lockdown.

But seeing Johnson’s miserable performance in the House of Commons last week only reinforced my belief that his confused and poor management of the crisis played a significant role in making it worse.

Shortly after receiving the keys to Downing Street last July, I wrote here that Johnson would be a disaster for the divided kingdom.

But I grossly underestimated how big the nightmare the pug-haired incompetent would have in the face of the biggest health crisis of our lives.

Of course, the coronavirus would have taxed the best politicians, but it has proven way too much for the worst of them like Johnson and his friend Donald Trump to handle it.

Johnson’s belated response to the pandemic at the start of the crisis was nothing short of shocking as he downplayed the severity of the virus despite dire warnings from the likes of Italy and Spain. Quite irresponsibly, Johnson was absent from important Cobra meetings about the virus so he could spend time sorting out his divorce settlement.

He even allowed the Cheltenham Festival to go racing and drew tens of thousands of horse fans into a situation where they played with their lives.

Much of what Johnson did was painfully shambolic. He crowed over handshakes in hospitals and delayed the introduction of a full national lockdown. A hesitation that experts said was a factor in 20. 000 deaths.

In a press conference in March, Johnson confidently predicted that « the tide can be turned on the coronavirus within 12 weeks ».

« I am absolutely confident that we can send coronavirus packaging, » he only chirped when he was taken to the hospital with Covid, but NHS doctors and nurses saved his life.

All this time there was talk of PPE and nursing homes, and there was also indecision about wearing face masks and education and more.

As the horror worsened and people applauded NHS heroes every Thursday night, Johnson clearly took the nation’s dogged spirit for granted.

His right-hand husband Dominic Cummings went on a 500-mile road trip to the family in Durham and insulted everyone’s intelligence by excusing a day trip to Barnard Castle to test his eyesight.

Johnson demonstrated an astounding lack of eyesight of his own by not firing Cummings and instead offering his « full support ». .

I have no doubt that the cracks in public trust for Johnson and his regime can be traced and traced back to those Cummings and Gings, while here Sinn Fein’s apparent disregard for Covid restrictions by attending Bobby Storey’s funeral en masse eroded the news is alarming.

Last week in the House of Commons. Boris tried to defend himself against criticism of his Covid policy, his constant U-turn and his empty but regular promises that the virus would be defeated. In the shipping box last week, he claimed that infection rates went down when they went up in most places.
