Beloved actress Barbara Windsor, best known for her roles in the Carry On… comedy series and as the most famous landlady of EastEnders, Peggy Mitchell died at the age of 83.
The acting legend, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014, died at the age of 8. At 3 p.m. on Thursday at a London nursing home, her husband Scott Mitchell confirmed to PA.
In a statement, Mitchell said, « Her death was from Alzheimer’s / dementia and Barbara eventually died peacefully and I spent the last seven days by her side.
‘Myself, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, smiles and affection for the many years of love, fun, friendship and shine that she has brought into our whole lives, and for the entertainment she has given so many thousands of others during her career. ‘
He continued: « Barbara’s last few weeks have been typical of her life. Full of humor, drama and fighting spirit until the end.
“It wasn’t the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserved. I will always take great pride in Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity in dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as possible. ‘

Concluding his heartfelt statement, Mitchell said, “May you rest in peace now, my precious bar. I’ve lost my wife, best friend, and soul mate, and my heart or life will never feel like this without you.
« I will make no further statements and I need the time now to lament this painful, personal loss. ‘
Honors have been received for the icon, including actress EastEnders co-stars Steve McFadden and Daniella Westbrook for condolences.
Dame Barbara, originally Barbara Ann Deeks, born on 6. She began acting at the age of 13 on August 8, 1937 in Shorditch, London, but was best known for her roles in the carry-on films between 1964 and 1974.
During this time she starred in nine films, the most famous being Carry On Camping, in which the cult scene can be seen when the actress’s bikini top flew off. She was also known for her infectious giggles in the movie. Dame Barbara was embroiled in a very public affair with her carry-on actor Sid James, despite being married to first husband Ronnie Knight at the time.
In 1994 she took on the infamous role of Peggy Mitchell, replacing the original actress Jo Warne. As a legendary landlady, she finally won Best Actress at the British Soap Awards in 1999 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
Your character has often been the center of major storylines, with many icons over the years. Protecting her family fiercely, Peggy reappeared on the pitch after her two sons Grant and Phil argued over Phil’s affair with Grant’s wife, Sharon, which is known to have resulted in Phil being tossed in the garage by his brother. Peggy attempted to evict Sharon from Walford, which resulted in her signing her stake in the pub, leaving the Mitchells as sole owners.
A few years later, Peggy traveled to Spain for Frank Butcher’s funeral, only to find that he had faked his own death and was very much alive and breathing. There she found her daughter Sam as a lap dancer and dragged her home.
Peggy continued to marry Archie, her former brother-in-law, but she ended the marriage after learning that he lied about his daughter’s baby death. Archie then set out to destroy the Mitchells, but his plans were ultimately foiled when he was murdered.
Dame Barbara was on hiatus from EastEnders from 2003 to 2005 due to the Epstein-Barr virus and returned to a one-year contract that was later extended.
She announced she was leaving the soap in 2009, and Peggy left her in 2010 after a pub fire. She returned for an episode in 2013 and then again in 2014. In 2015 she returned for the anniversary.
In 2016, Peggy Phil announced that her breast cancer had returned and she was dying. She later discovered that it had spread to her brain and tried to convince Phil to help her die. When he refused, she promised her sons that she would not kill herself, but to preserve her own dignity and die a strong woman, as people remembered, she took a fatal overdose and died in her sleep.
Dame Barbara began performing on stage in 1950 at the age of 13 and made her West End debut in 1952 as part of the chorus for Love From Judy. She adopted the stage name Windsor after drawing inspiration from the Queen’s coronation in 1953.
In other projects, Dame Barbara was the doormouse in Disney live-action Alice In Wonderland in 2010 and starred in the TV series Bluebirds, the 80s show Worzel Gummage, and she also appeared in Doctor Who and One Foot In The Grave on as a small role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang alongside Dick Van Dyke.
In 2016 she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). .
In her personal life, Dame Barbara chose never to have children and in her autobiography revealed that she had five abortions in her life after deciding that she did not want her own family because she was with the Felt abandoned her parents’ divorce from her father.
In 2014, Dame Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but the disease wasn’t revealed until May 2018, when husband 55-year-old Scott Mitchell first spoke openly about the past four years. Mitchell appeared on Good Morning Britain to reveal that Dame Barbara had recently forgotten who he was.
Since then, they have raised huge sums of money for Alzheimer’s charities. Several of the EastEnders members plan to run the marathon in April at 100. To collect 000 pounds.
