GILLINGHAM boss Steve Evans announced that he had previously been asked several times by owner and chairman Lee Power to accept the job in Swindon Town.

Evans called Town « a wonderful club, » but said the time was never right to move to Wiltshire.

Swindon officially approached Evans when he was manager of Mansfield Town – days after Luke Williams’ sack in May 2017 – but was turned down, while Gillingham was also refused to take the Glaswegian to Priestfield Stadium a few months later.

Speaking to Kent Online prior to his team’s clash with John Sheridan’s men that weekend, the Gillingham manager said, “I know the owner and chairman (Lee Power) very well.

« He tried two or three times to get me to Swindon and it was never right, but it’s a wonderful club, isn’t it? »

Swindon will face a tough test this weekend as Gillingham are unbeaten in their last four League One games and win 2-0 away at Bristol Rovers mid-week.

Meanwhile, Town took a 2-0 lead against Crewe Alexandra on the way to a 2-4 defeat.

Evans is still confident that Saturday’s visitors will offer his players a tough test.

He said, “I’ve known your manager John Sheridan for years and he will lead you to success.

« They were 2-0 against Crewe (on Tuesday) and it could have been three or four, they didn’t take their chances and were penalized.

“They are a very athletic team, they move the ball, they are purposeful, they find pockets. There is just no easy game against them.

“We’re going to make changes (because of the lack of time between games) and make sure we can put together a team that can win us a game.

“If we win, and it’s all if, three points would get us going just before Christmas time and given the key players we had absent, what the boys are doing is enormous. ”
