Environmental officials have issued a Christmas flood warning for a section of the River Nene near Northampton.

Two other areas of the district are also affected by flood alarms ahead of the Met Office’s forecasts for 24 hours of heavy rain.

Meteorologists warned of up to 6 cm of rain and strong winds hitting the area from 6 a.m. today to 6 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

Environment officials say flooding is « expected » around the Cogenhoe Mill trailer site and « possible » on the Nene near Thrapston and on the River Tove between Towcester and Cosgrove.

A spokesman said: « It has rained heavily in the Nene catchment for the past 24 hours and more heavy rains are forecast for Wednesday.

« As a result, we expect river levels to remain high and affect the Cogenhoe Mill area for the next few days.

« People should avoid river paths and please stay away from river banks and floods. We are monitoring the situation and have employees in the region who check the flood protection, remove blockades and support the rescue service and the council.

« The levels at the middle Nene and at the Cappenham River Gauge on the Tove will remain high for the next few days due to persistent heavy rainfall.

« As a result, roads and farmland are expected to be flooded today. We expect flooding to hit the River Tove from Towcester to Cosgrove, including Silverstone Brook. «

The environmental agency’s flood information service provides information on preparing for a flood.
