Google honored the Nobel Prize-winning economist, author and professor Sir William Arthur Lewis with a doodle on its homepage on Thursday.

Sir William Arthur Lewis was born on Jan.. January 1915 in St. Lucia was born and was considered one of the pioneers in the field of modern development economics. He was known for his contributions to the field of economic development and was considered a pioneer in his research.

He was also the first Black Faculty member at the London School of Economics (LSE), the first Black to hold a professorship at a British University (Manchester University), and the first Black Instructor to be a full professor at the Princeton University received.

On that day in 1979, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for his groundbreaking work modeling the economic forces that affect developing countries.

Today’s Doodle was illustrated by Camilla Ru, a Manchester-based guest artist. It shows the Nobel Prize-winning scientist smiling with a huge blackboard behind him with a graphic and the word « Google » in the standard font « Digital-7 ».

« Lewis shifted his focus to world economic history and development, and in 1954 published his seminal article » Economic Development with Unlimited Labor. Among many valuable accomplishments, Lewis made an influential contribution to the United Nations and shared his expertise as an advisor to governments in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. He also helped set it up and was the first president of the Caribbean Development Bank, ”it says on the Google Doodle page.

Lewis was born around the time the Caribbean island of St. . Lucia was a British colony. Despite racial discrimination and several other challenges, he received a government scholarship in 1932 and set out to study at the London School of Economics.

In the following years he did his PhD in industrial economics at the LSE and was a full-time professor at the age of 33.

He returned to the Caribbean in 1959 after being named Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. In 1963 he was knighted for his contributions to the economy.
