In addition to being a pioneer in his research, Lewis was the first black faculty member at the London School of Economics, the first black person to hold a professorship at a UK university (at Manchester University), and the first black Instructor who received her full professorship at Princeton University. He was born on 23. January 1915 in Castries on the Caribbean island of St. . Lucia, then a British colony. Despite the challenges posed by racial discrimination, he received a government scholarship in 1932 and began studying at the London School of Economics, where he eventually received a PhD in industrial economics.
Lewis rose quickly into the academic ranks and was a full professor at 33 – one of the highest honors for a full-time professor. He then focused on world economic history and development, and in 1954 published his seminal article, “Economic Development with Unlimited Labor. ”
Among many valuable accomplishments, Lewis made an influential contribution to the United Nations and shared his expertise as an advisor to governments in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. He also helped set it up and was the first president of the Caribbean Development Bank. In 1963, the British government knighted Lewis in honor of his lifelong achievements
