Hollyoaks treated fans to yet another blast from the past, and Miles Higson surprisingly returned to his role as Seth Costello.
Seth, who last appeared on Channel 4 soap in 2011, is now helping his evil grandfather, Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle), pursue vicious vengeance against the McQueen family.
Seth is now in a relationship with Theresa (Jorgie Porter) and puts him in the perfect position to return Sila’s information about the McQueens. No wonder the blackmail doll had so much inside gossip.
Theresa is aware that she and Seth are extorting money from their family, but does not know that Silas is closely involved. Keep pace?
« It was midsummer when we just got out of lockdown. It was quite a shock. I was actually in the running for a regular series with another soap at the time, but Hollyoaks holds a special place in my heart as it’s one of my first professional jobs and I was more than happy to return. «
Ever wondered if a return was planned or was the show insane after you left?
« I’ve always been open to coming back. I had a great time on the show last time so it felt like coming home. I knew I had a family relationship with Maxine and my nephew Bobby was on the show, so there was always a chance it could happen. «
Some of the classic Silas and Costello episodes aired as Hollyoak’s favorites this summer. Did that inspire the producers to bring you back?
« Little did I know I was on TV again until a friend sent me a screenshot! I initially thought they inspired our return, but it turned out the pre-Covid plot was planned. I always try to look for the silver lining, so this story is at least one good thing to get out of this year. «
« Seth is the key link between Silas and the McQueens. Without him, Silas’ plan wouldn’t really work. I think you’ll have to wait and see if he’s a mastermind behind the plan or just a farmer. «
« I don’t think you can go through what Seth went through in life and not have a little bit of darkness in you. He’s a bit of a damaged soul – most of his family have been murdered and the other half don’t speak to him.
« Silas is all he has left and they say you will become the average of the five people you spend most of your time with. . . «
How did you feel about being part of this big twist, especially after so much fan speculation about Silas and the blackmail doll?
« I thought it was a great story. I didn’t think going back to the soap was right unless it was a meaty story, and I was delighted the moment I knew Jeff was on board.
« Seth brings a really interesting twist to the blackmail story as he’s stuck between his biological family (his past) and his new family with Theresa (his future?). « . «
« You have a really interesting relationship. I like to imagine that during his free time, Seth was on a mindfulness retreat where he found peace and forgave Silas.
« But deep down, I don’t think that’s possible. I think at some point Seth would break up, and if anything, he would be the one to take revenge on Silas. Unless someone suggests it. «
« Well, I need new footage for my show reel, so some scenes with Jeff were ideal ha. But I knew most of my scenes would be with Jorgie Porter. She is absolutely pure joy to be here. «
« Seth will be here after Christmas. He’s ready to fight for a future with Theresa, but that might not be possible if the McQueens had something to do with it. They are an impressive bunch. «
You were involved in some amazing storylines during your first stint, including two series from Hollyoak’s Later and Silas’ Dramatic Downfall. How do you look back on your original time on the show?
« I’ve had two of the best years of my life. The other members of the Costellos were some of the best actors not only on the show but in business as well. I learned so much during my time here with them.
« I can safely say that I am a better actor now than I was then. Hopefully the audience will enjoy what we have in store. «
On social media, we can see that you stayed close to certain actors. Can you tell us about the lasting friendships you made with the show?
« Some of my cast mates have become lifelong friends and family. I had a difficult time in my personal life last year and it was some of my fellow actors – especially Rachel Shenton – who helped me.
« Actors are a rare breed. We think differently and I think we have an emotional openness that not everyone has – it’s ultimately our job. Making friends with some of these people when I was 17 changed my life drastically for the better. «
Would you be interested in doing more soap work in the future? Is there any that you have in mind?
« I was with Corrie in 2019. Filming on the cobblestones was one that got checked off the bucket list. I try not to look too much into the future so I wouldn’t say I have a specific job in mind. We just have to wait and see what 2021 has in store in terms of action. «
Hollyoaks is currently broadcasting new episodes Monday through Thursday at 6 a.m.. 30 p.m. on channel 4, with first screenings at 7 p.m. on E4. Classic episodes titled Hollyoaks Favorites will air on Fridays at 7 p.m. on E4.
