In a comment today, former Australian leg spinner Shane Warne referred to the nickname Cheteshwar Pujara got when he played for England team Yorkshire County cricket. Warne argued that « Cheteshwar » is not the easiest name to pronounce, and so it was called « Steve » by his Yorkshire teammates.
Warne doesn’t seem to know that casually calling non-English players « Steve » has become a serious problem in England. Earlier this month, two former Yorkshire employees, Taj Butt and Tony Bowry, proved that the Yorkshire Club institutionalized racism.
« They called every person of color » Steve, « » said Butt. “Even Cheteshwar Pujara who went overseas as a professional was called Steve because they couldn’t pronounce his name. ”
« Well I would prefer Cheteshwar, but it’s difficult to pronounce so the guys came up with Steve, » Pujara said in 2018.
The question is – is it okay to give a random English name to a man with a different background just because his name is difficult to pronounce? – TNS, agencies
