« Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is usually treated by taking a hormone replacement pill called levothyroxine every day, » explains the NHS.

As the health body explains, levothyroxine replaces the thyroxine hormone, which your thyroid is not making enough of.

It adds, « You will first get regular blood tests until the correct dose of levothyroxine is reached. This can take a while to get everything right. «

In the UK, the most common cause of underactive thyroid is autoimmune thyroiditis known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

« When this happens, your immune system attacks your thyroid, damaging it and stopping the production of enough thyroid hormone, » explains Bupa.

According to the health authorities, a thyroid gland removal or treatment with radioactive iodine for an overactive thyroid gland can also lead to an underactive thyroid gland.
