World News – UK – Michael Alig, infamous « Club Kid Killer », dead at the age of 54

. .

Michael Alig – the infamous nightlife legend, « king of the club kids » and convicted murderer – has died from an apparent overdose in his The New York Daily News reports from official sources that she was in Upper Manhattan on Christmas Day are at home. He was 54 years old.

Alig reportedly took heroin just before he passed out around 3 a.m.. m. his friend told the police, and medics found him dead at the scene.

In the 1990s, Alig was a notorious impresario for Peter Gatien’s nightclub empire (which included Limelight, the Palladium, and the Tunnel) and a « pied piper for young clubbies, » as Michael Musto reported on the Village Voice pages. In 1996, Alig pleaded guilty to the murder of his drug dealer Andre « Angel » Melendez and served 17 years in prison. A drug money dispute turned violent and led to a gruesome affair: Robert « Freeze » Riggs hit Melendez on the head with a hammer, then Alig smothered him with a sweatshirt until he died.

The duo hid the mutilated corpse in the bathtub (covered it with ice and a few dashes of Calvin Klein Eternity Cologne) and then partied for more than a week – fried on a mind-boggling mix of heroin, ketamine, cocaine and rophynol – and even invited friends into the apartment while Melendez’s body was rotting in the other room. When the stench became unbearable, they dismembered the body and dumped it in the Hudson River.

The « party monster » and killer was the subject of the memoir of James St. . James, originally called Disco Bloodbath, who spurned a Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato documentary, Party Monster. Alig’s story later inspired her 2003 feature film of the same name, in which Macaulay Culkin as Alig and Seth Green as St. . James. Another documentary, Glory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig, is now also being streamed.

Alig was released from prison in 2014 and returned to New York. He claimed to have been rehabilitated (although the nightlife no longer existed as he remembered it). . « The biggest thing I learned in prison was patience, » he told Rolling Stone at the time. « I was demanding and self-centered, but in prison you learn very quickly that you are in their time. When Freeze and I first went to the methadone clinic, we were there for almost 36 hours. You sleep in the waiting room.

« I went to jail addicted to heroin and it’s a very difficult drug to get out of – especially in jail, » he added. “I would wean myself, go through the withdrawal, and expect to feel better a week or a month later. And when that didn’t happen, I decided, « Fuck it. I committed this horrific crime, no one will ever forgive me, I might as well aim high and don’t have to worry about it. ‘”

Alig also discussed the toll that drug use caused him in solitary confinement. “I’ve been through this for eight, nine, ten years. At one point there was even two years of sobriety, but it never took long enough to get my brain wired back to the way it was before I started using drugs, ”he said. « It wasn’t until I was gone four years that my brain started to wire up again. But you asked about the lonely one. Each time your urine tests positive you will be given an additional year of solitary confinement. If you join a drug program, you will be kicked out. And then when you are in solitary confinement, all the more reason to use drugs! «

After Alig finished his parole, he tried to revive himself as a nightlife resident in 2017 and threw a party to celebrate. Page 6 reported that Alig received death threats for throwing the party, and many critics criticized the idea of people « celebrating » a convicted murderer. « The bad are really bad, » Alig told Rolling Stone. « They say, » We’re going to kill you and we think you should get the electric chair and since the state didn’t, we are! «

Despite other problems with drugs, addiction, and arrests, Alig remained contrite as he tried to reintegrate into society. « Eighteen years later, when I look back at the person I was then, I feel nothing but shame and disgust, » Alig wrote in a 2014 article published by the New York Post. “I was a selfish junkie who killed another person. ”

Billingsley also played Stark Industries scientist William Ginter Riva in Iron Man and Spider-Man: Far From Home. But you may have struggled to recognize him. In a token of solidarity with co-star Jeff Bridges, who had to be bald for the film, Billingsley shaved his head. « That’s how I got my look: I’ll tell you what, I’m going to play this role and shave a ditch in my head as a show of solidarity, » Billingsley told Vulture in 2019. « And then I just wanted to explore the character’s looks. In 2012, A Broadway Story: The Musical opened on Broadway with Billingsley as one of the producers. « The idea of a musical was very, very inspiring for me because it really is an extension of the story, » he told Playbill at the time. « I don’t think you want to redo the story. You did a pretty good job on the first pass. But Ralphie was a dreamer in the film. So many of these fantasy sequences lend themselves so well to the big Broadway song-and-dance pieces. And that’s exactly what it is. If the father wins the leg lamp, it will turn into a leg lamp kick line. « For more information on child actors and where they are now, see The Greatest Child Actors of the 1990s, Then and Now.

When News of the World opens on Christmas Day, viewers will see plenty of action-packed scenes starring Tom Hanks becoming a cowboy as Civil War veteran Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd. But there are also many emotional and heartfelt moments between Hanks and his scene-robbing film partner, 12-year-old Helena Zengel. “News of the World” was adapted from the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles and co-written and directed by Paul Greengrass. Hanks plays Captain Kidd, a former war hero who travels through border towns in the southwest reading the news of the day trying to get workers and peasants for change. On the way he meets 10-year-old Johanna « Cicada » Leonberger (Zengel), an orphan who has been orphaned twice, who was adopted by a tribe of the Kiowa Indians before they met a tragic end. Kidd decides to take the girl to his closest relative in Hill Country, but the journey ahead is fraught with peril – and the occasional calamity, despite the overall rudeness of the film. Also Read: Ron Howard’s Panned ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ was the seventh most popular program streamed over Thanksgiving. At first, Johanna is wild about Captain Kidd and it takes a lot of persuasion (and food) to prove he’s not a threat. But the tension finally subsides as the unlikely couple cross the dangerous Texas countryside together. In a gripping scene, Johanna and Kidd get into an exchange of fire with some unsavory outlaws. Kidd retires to the mountains to hide and soon runs out of ammo for his pistol. He tells Johanna to run away, but instead she sneaks back to her car to find a bucket of spare coins – which they use to load bird-shot cartridges to defend themselves. Economical! Shortly after the shooting ends, the two of them swap out and Johanna starts painting Kidd’s horse while she sings a Kiowa blessing. It’s a brief but touching look at their changing relationship and begins to cement for viewers that Johanna sees Kidd as a protector rather than a kidnapper. Also read: « News of the World » movie review: Tom Hanks plays a viewfinder who reads the legends in old-school westerns. Later, when the two are out, they play the classic game « I Spy », but with a twist – Johanna only speaks Kiowa and a little German. The two take turns pointing out animals and plants along the road and teaching each other how to pronounce them, laughing at the new words and slowly breaking the language barrier between them. This continues in a later delightful scene when Kidd asks Johanna to teach him her favorite song in Kiowa. There’s another touching moment in the film that completely changes the dynamic between the two travelers – but we can’t tell you everything because it’s definitely a spoiler. Let’s just say Johanna comes to the aid of Captain Kidd in a very unexpected way and eventually saves the former soldier’s bacon. « News of the World » hits theaters in December. 25 and is available internationally on Netflix the same day.
