Nicola Coughlan, 33, shared how she had to move from London when she was younger because she had failed as an actress as a result of which she fell into a deep depression. She explained, « I haven’t auditioned in about a year. I didn’t have any money in my bank account so I had to move back in with my parents.
« I was so depressed and it was so difficult. It was a very slow recovery from that.
« I couldn’t get up. I felt like I had failed at everything. I felt like I had nothing and I had abandoned my family.
« You think all these horrible things about yourself and it got worse because I took out a loan and kept thinking about being financially in debt. ”
Coughlan added, “If I wanted to go out for coffee, I had to ask my parents. I said, « I’m 28, I’m too old to have done this! »

« I started to think – and it’s such a dangerous attitude – that I didn’t want to be with people because I didn’t want them to feel down. « .
« I thought if I went out with my friends I would be the worthless person in the corner – but that’s such a dangerous mindset. ”
But Nicolas family was her lifeline in her dark time and helped her regain her self-esteem.
She continued with Glamor magazine: « There was nothing that turned it around for me – I was getting out of this phase very slowly.
« My family was great and my sister literally pulled me out of bed and made me run.
« Such things have given me a meaning again and that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. ”
Depression is more than just feeling unhappy or full for a few days, according to the NHS.
It explains, « Most people feel down, but when you are depressed you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, not just for a few days.
“Some people think depression is trivial and not a real health condition. You’re wrong – it’s a real disease with real symptoms. Depression is not a sign of weakness or something to snap out of by pulling yourself together. .
« The good news is that most people with depression can make a full recovery with the right treatment and support. ”
Symptoms of depression range from mild to severe. In the mildest case, you may simply feel constantly depressed, while severe depression can make you feel suicidal.
Psychological symptoms of depression can include persistent bad mood or sadness, hopelessness and helplessness, low self-esteem, and tearfulness.
The physical symptoms of depression are moving or speaking more slowly than usual, changes in appetite or weight, and unexplained pain.
Social symptoms may include avoiding friends and engaging in less social activities, neglecting your hobbies and interests, and having difficulties in your home, work, or family life.
You should see a family doctor if you have symptoms of depression every day for more than two weeks for most of the day.
