World News – UK – Ringside tribute to knife crime victims who won’t see Christmas

"Not much has changed since my youth"

. .

Former British boxing champion Ashley Theophane wants to knock out the knife criminal in what may be the last fight of his career.

Theophane’s live TV fight against super welterweight Sam Eggington will have four empty chairs by the ring tonight, the equivalent of the number of victims stabbed to death on average each week in the UK.

Born in Paddington, Theophane, 40, spent six months in custody and awaited trial of armed robbery as a teenager. He was acquitted in court.

However, realizing he was « wasting his life, » he started boxing and was later promoted to Las Vegas legend Floyd Mayweather.

The ex-world welterweight champion who racked up 50 wins now leads the charity Gloves Up, Knives Down.

Outside the ring, Theophane – nicknamed « Sweetheart » – brings attention to youth knife crime and goes to schools to encourage students to start boxing to learn discipline, respect and self-worth.

He told the Standard, “I have a strong sense of knife crime, but not much has changed since I was young.

“I come from this background. When I was young, I had no good plans and changed.

« I can show you that you don’t have to go this way. You can go on to make your dreams come true.

« You just have to look at what Anthony Joshua did. If you don’t work out while exercising, you won’t get any rewards. ”

If Theophane wins the fight against Eggington, he plans to box one more time abroad before retiring after 17 years.

Hennessy Sport promoter Mick Hennessy said, « It’s fantastic that fans are being allowed back into sports arenas, but it’s important that we remember those who can’t, especially as their lives were tragically killed has been. « . ”

Joe Brett, Founder of Gloves Up, Knives Down added, « It’s easy for people to dismiss knife crime as a statistic – but these are lost lives, young people robbed of their futures, and real families and communities. who were devastated. « . ”

London Tory Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey said, “When I was younger, gymnastics and the Army Cadets kept me straight and tight. Boxing can do the same for young people today. ”

Theophane’s fight with Eggington in Redditch is exclusively live on Channel 5 this evening from 10 p.m..
