Former British boxing champion Ashley Theophane wants to knock out the knife criminal in what may be the last fight of his career.
Theophane’s live TV fight against super welterweight Sam Eggington will have four empty chairs by the ring tonight, the equivalent of the number of victims stabbed to death on average each week in the UK.
Born in Paddington, Theophane, 40, spent six months in custody and awaited trial of armed robbery as a teenager. He was acquitted in court.
However, realizing he was « wasting his life, » he started boxing and was later promoted to Las Vegas legend Floyd Mayweather.
The ex-world welterweight champion who racked up 50 wins now leads the charity Gloves Up, Knives Down.
Outside the ring, Theophane – nicknamed « Sweetheart » – brings attention to youth knife crime and goes to schools to encourage students to start boxing to learn discipline, respect and self-worth.
He told the Standard, “I have a strong sense of knife crime, but not much has changed since I was young.
“I come from this background. When I was young, I had no good plans and changed.

If Theophane wins the fight against Eggington, he plans to box one more time abroad before retiring after 17 years.
