A driver says his trip to Hereford was marked by flooded roads and abandoned cars as rain and wind ravaged the county.

After a day of heavy rain, Herefordshire and the surrounding area have 13 flood warnings and two flood warnings as the Met Office’s yellow weather warning remains in effect until 6am on Thursday.

Rhodri Rhys made the trip from Gloucester to Hereford tonight, a 30 mile journey via Newent that usually took about an hour and ended up taking three hours.

Flooding along the B4214 Newent Road meant cars had been parked and back roads were also flooded.

« It only took three hours to get from Hereford to Gloucester, » he said when he arrived in Hereford around 7am. 40 o’clock.

« Newent Street closed in several places. Water flowed over and almost over my hood and many stranded cars. The worst I’ve ever seen.

« Back roads also blocked with deep water and cars. M50 is the only safe way. «  »

Since then, Highways England has said the M50 was wet-bound for Newent because of flooding between the M5 and junction three.

The motorway was also closed in an easterly direction between the second junction for Ledbury and the first junction for Tewkesbury.
