The emergency services are now all on site and it was decided to block the road and set up a detour.
Since the clockwise lane is currently closed, the collision is causing major traffic jams, including 14 miles of queues to approach the scene and 70-minute delays.
Counterclockwise onlookers and slow traffic have resulted in six mile queues towards Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.
Highways England has now published the full clockwise detour route for drivers. It said: « Road users are advised to follow the diversion route of the hollow triangle on road signs. Exit the M25 at J16 and take the M40 east.
« Leave the J1 of the M40 (Denham) and take the first exit from Denham Roundabout onto the A40 towards Amersham.
« Turn right at the junction with the A412 and follow the A412 towards Rickmansworth. Follow the A412 to the Maple Cross roundabout and take the first exit onto the A412 / M25 junction towards the M25.
The average speed when approaching the scene on the lane in a clockwise direction is 16 km / h. It is therefore likely that queues will continue to form during rush hour traffic and while the road remains closed.
