Paris’ Yoka survived a tough challenge from German Christian Hammer to unanimously prevail in an unpleasant 10-round affair on Friday at the H Arena in Nantes, France. The ninth win in the 2016 Olympic gold medalist’s career will be his last in 2020 as the undefeated heavyweight expert reportedly broke his hair during the fight.

« It’s been an uphill battle against a tough opponent, but we’re growing [from experience], » Yoka said on Saturday. “Unfortunately I can’t fight in December because I broke my hand. «

Yoka (9: 0, 7 KO) should compete against the Croatian Petar Milas (15: 0, 11 KO) for the vacant EU heavyweight title. The fight is expected to take place in a location in France in mid-December. The event has to be postponed due to Yoka’s injury, although it will be postponed rather than canceled, as the EU – unlike other sanctions bodies who are far too liberal with their quirky rules – has strict guidelines for boxers who commit to their title fights.

The event should also include an undercard appearance by Estelle Yoka-Mossely, who also won Olympic gold in Rio in 2016 and appeared on the same show as her husband in each of her last two appearances. Yoka-Mossely made an eight-round decision against former kickboxer Emma Gongora on the undercard of the Friday show.

The ultimate boxing powerhouse also shared a bill last September in Nanterre, France. Yoka-Mossely (8-0, 1KO) showed Aurelie Froment – her third win in a row against an undefeated opponent and her first fight since the couple’s second child was born in May – while Yoka pierced compatriot and former title challenger Johann Duhaupas 121 Seconds in the main event.

The win over Duhaupas was the first ring appearance for Yoka since last September. His knockout win against the German Michael Wallisch took place at the same place. This was his second fight in less than three months after being banned for a year for repeatedly violating random drug tests.

A triumphant return last September was the hope of a fresh start when the unbeaten 28-year-old wanted to take his place among the booming young heavyweights.

Friday’s show against Hammer was seen by the sport’s fiercest critics as a step in the wrong direction, despite the fact that the Hamburg-based Romanian heavyweight is a tough night’s job for anyone in the division. This is even more true when you are forced to fight your way through a hand injury, which in turn explains why Yoka’s corner pushed him to just pave his way to victory rather than trying to exit the show.

The win holds Yoka’s unbeaten record, even if it has cost him style points. Unfortunately, it also cost him another payday in 2020 as plans to spend more time with his wife and undefeated colleague are spent at home during the holidays rather than in a boxing ring.

« We’re going to take some time off to take care of it, » vowed Yoka, who is jointly promoted by Top Rank and Ringstar-France, with the former fishing for a state trip for the 6’7 « heavyweight at some point Year 2021.
