The Vicar of Dibley Christmas split left viewers tonight after Dawn French mentioned some of the former cast members who are no longer with us.
Dawn has returned as our favorite Vicar Geraldine Granger in the three-part BBC special entitled The Vicar of Dibley in Lockdown.
The new episodes of the comedy will follow life in the fictional village in 2020 through online sermons from Geraldine.
As the pastor takes the lead throughout the episode, she keeps some of our favorite character’s memories warm in a heartwarming and comedic way.
During the episode, Geraldine paid tribute to Owen Newitt, who was played by Roger Lloyd-Pack.
She also mentioned John Bluthal, who played the role of Frank Pickle in the comedy, although he died of natural causes in 2018.
Some viewers thought it was « strange » to include the deceased cast on social media. One tweeted: “WTF? Aren’t all the other actors dead now? Seems tasteless. ‘
« It’s so strange to see that # vicarofdibley thing, considering how much of the cast is dead. The show was the cast, not just the pastor. « . Screaming at Frank is just weird… ”commented another.
While another said, « Owen was mentioned more than anyone and Roger Lloyd Pack has been dead for almost 7 years! »
« Look at myriad complaints, but why are you making fun of the dead? » asked another viewer.
I’m more angry about the #VicarOfDibley because I pretend that certain characters are still alive than about any political protest. It could have been a beautifully poignant moment to pay tribute to the loss of the actors who played Alice, Frank and Owen.
Other viewers praised Dawn for bringing happiness and joy in 2020. Many said it was a sweet gesture to include Owen and Frank.
Anne Hegerty meets the former Ukip leader after calling The Vicar of Dibley a « Satanist ».
While adding, « Dawn French, the funniest person ever !! Thanks for bringing the pastor back !! Look forward to more Vicar Zooms! “
Nice to see Geraldine again this evening. Also cute, the characters of Frank and Owen are still trying hard to keep the memory alive. Hugo was stupid as always. #vicarofdibley pic. Twitter. com / RhMoEU6Hfv
