It looks like we can get back to Ruth Jones and James Corden’s sitcom after all . . .

It’s fair to say that Gavin and Stacey’s 2019 Christmas special ends on a bang – and a year later we’re still waiting for answers to follow this cliffhanger.
Last year’s Christmas special will be on Christmas Eve at 20. 40pm repeated on BBC One, but the highly anticipated revival finale is no less shocking than 2019.
In the episode’s final scene, Nessa (Ruth Jones) shockingly suggests James Cordens Smithy take their relationship to the next level after an episode in which Smithy was ready to tie the knot with his critical novelty girlfriend ( Laura Aikman).
« You know you are fine, don’t you, Smithy? » Says Nessa at the end of the episode.

« I’m not going to lie, you are not for everyone, but at the end of the day when all is said and done you are clean.
« And I know it was complicated, you and me. I like all of that. But i love it. And if the truth is told . . . I love you. ”
Smithy thinks she is speaking platonic and replies that he feels the same way, except that Nessa cuts him off.
« No smithy, you don’t listen. I know it’s weird, okay? But i do. I love you. From the bottom of my heart. ”
The episode cuts to the credits at this point, leaving its question unanswered and an entire nation of viewers in the dark about Smithy’s answer.
Compared to the original series finale (which aired on New Years Day 2010 and completed most of the plot threads), this final scene seems to leave things a lot more open to a return to the story and characters across the board – and according to Jones and the other cast is definitely hoping that more Gavin & Stacey will come over to see what happens next.
« Well, obviously the Smithy and Nessa scene is interesting, and as you can see now, it’s not necessarily over because it ends on proposal, » Jones said at a screening for the 2019 Christmas special.
« When James and I did that last scene, this suggestion scene, it was the middle of the night, we were really scared that a pap would get a picture because obviously when I’m on one knee it’s obvious what is going on … “
Jones reiterated, however, that at this early stage there were no concrete plans for another special or even a full series, even with the cliffhanger included.
« Honestly, hand on heart – there is no plan at the moment, » she said. “There were no sticky notes, there was no sitting in a room where another episode was being recorded.
« But I think there is obviously room to move on. All I’m going to say now is who knows? «
Other cast members were now more certain that the ending meant that more episodes were imminent. Many said that they are already interested in coming back and solving the story.
« Well, I hope there will be more, » Joanna Page, who plays Stacey on the show, told RadioTimes. com. « I can’t say because I don’t write it. But I would like to do more. ”
« I mean yes, of course I would love to, » agreed Mathew Horne, who plays Gavin. « There’s a reason you wrote this ending.
« Oh god, yes of course, » said Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason on the show. « I don’t think they would have written this ending without possibly thinking about it. ”
« I don’t think there’s much more to it. I think there might be something else in there, ”added Melanie Waters, who plays Gwen.
« As we said before we are careful, you know it ends on a climax and you don’t want to do too much, you know you want to keep it special, » Wilfort agreed.
While there was no official announcement of a sequel or special, there were good signs that a comeback was on the way – the BBC recently teased that the sitcom would return « one day, » and James Corden recently said metro. co. Great Britain that he was hoping for another episode. However, Corden also said the next installment would really be the last (gasp!).
« I hope so much we do, » he said. “The next one will really be the last, last part. ”
It will, however, wait a bit for Corden to add, « [It’s] a little too much pressure on my chest to be under the fear of 2020 at the moment, if I’m honest.
« If I had an idea to do another Christmas special, I probably wouldn’t be able to breathe. « . So we will cross that bridge when we get to it. But I promise you we won’t take you over this bridge unless we think it’s worth the trip. ”
For now, Jones and Corden are hoping fans will just enjoy the Christmas present they received – and even if it doesn’t get anywhere, Jones says she’ll keep the memory of that crucial final scene forever anyway.
« When, as Nessa, I put my hand on my heart and said to Smithy, ‘I love you, no, I love you, I love you with all my heart’ – when I said it, I really meant it to James », she said.
« Because the journey we’ve been on – and we can argue, don’t get me wrong, we have a very fraternal relationship – but our friendship at heart is so strong.
« I am so proud of our friendship and I am proud of the journey we have taken together, » she concluded, visibly emotionally.
