MALANG: A powerful underwater earthquake struck Indonesia’s main island of Java on Saturday, but no tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of major damage or loss.
The US Geological Survey said the 6.0 magnitude quake was centered at a depth of 82 kilometers 44.8 kilometers south of Sumberpucung town in Malang district in East Java province.
Rahmat Triyono, the leader of the earthquake and tsunami Center in Indonesia, said in a statement the underwater earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
He urged people to stay away from slopes of earth or rocks that could cause landslides as people felt moderate tremors for a few seconds in some parts of the province.
The Disaster Agency released photos of a damaged ceiling in a hospital in Blitar, a neighboring town of Malang, while the roofs were in place some houses were reportedly damaged.
